With demand strong for the newly launched Audi A1, and fuel-economy a pressing issue on the wallets of most consumers, the company stands in the deep stages of development on an Audi A2 successor, after axing the car back in 2005.“A new A2 is being discussed internally and a number of concepts are being looked at,” an insider told Autocar. “I wouldn’t be surprised if it was shown first as a concept. “I’m sure that the new car will be in a similar mould of the old model: futuristic, low volume and using state-of-the-art technology,” the source added. “It will be an unashamedly hi-tech Audi.”The original A2 was a fuel-economy fox, with its all aluminum body weighing i at 895kg. There are rumors that Audi engineers are targeting a weight of 800kg, for the new 4-seater city car.It is also rumored that the new A2 cold be the vehicle that ushers into production Audi’s new Multimaterial Space Frame technology, which will be one of the underpinnings to the company’s next generation MLB-Evo platform. Insiders say that the new platform will will used on all future models, from the A4 straight on up through the Q7.
